PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Part of the Roselli product range includes
highly esteemed knives produced with pattern welded Damascus
and Wootz Damascus steel.
With its origin in India and the Middle East, the history
of ultra high carbon steel dates back more than 2000 years.
The steel itself was produced in India and later became
known as Wootz. Crusaders of the Middle Ages were the first
Europeans to encounter wootz swords, which they identified
with the ancient city of Damascus. The crusaders brought
the swords to Western Europe but not the secret of how this
steel had been processed into blades. Ever since, European
metallurgists aimed at finding out about the technique to
reproduce wootz steel but none of the efforts have ever
been successful to produce blades with high quaiity damascene
patterns.
In the early days of steel forging, the pattern-welded steels
were produced by forge welding alternating sheets of high-
and low-carbon steels Consuiming process was the only way
to provide the steel with sufficient hardness. Because both
techniques result in attractive surface patterns, both wootz
and pattern welded blades have come to be known as "Damascus",
and fine pattern-welded Damascus blades are produced today
world-wide.
The technique of producing wootz Damascus is a lost art.
However, in a cooperative effort to track down the secret
of wootz steel, Roselli now has found a method to display
a similar surface pattern on his new steel which is characteristic
of Wootz blades. The Roselli Wootz has a attractive surface
pattern composed of swirling patterns of etched regions
on a dark background Apart from the correct steel composition,
the forging operations require proper temperature control
.Wootz cuts like UHC-steel - outstanding!
