How
does the Belgian chunk work?
When tool steel is honed, the burr created
during grinding is removed and the cutting edge is polished. During this
process, the following happens to the Belgian chunk moistened with water:
When the blade of the tool rubs over the evenly
fine-grained surface of the stone, the abrasion first causes the softer
components of the sedimentary rock such as ash, clay and mica to break off and
the embedded garnets to protrude slightly, then they too break away from the
parent rock (this is known as grain breakout) and form a thin paste with the
water, the grinding paste.
During the uniform grinding movement, the curves
of the garnets penetrate the steel easily and remove fine chips from the metal.
The hardness of the garnet causes very sharp abrasion, but the round shape of
the beads means that no cracks are created, but rather a fine polish. This combination
of speed and fineness is unique in the world. It enables a cutting edge to be
achieved with which, for example, wood fibers can be cleanly cut across.
